MARCO & MARÍA, BBW 2015

MARCO & MARÍA, BBW 2015

The new collection from Canary Island firm M&M presented its creators with the difficult challenge of introducing modern lines to a source of inspiration from the mid-19th century which is apparent in their creations, albeit only in brief touches

In line with the firm’s hallmark, Marco & María once again link the present with inspiration from the past. The inner layers of the long dresses come to out to play, insinuating themselves among floaty fabrics like can-can dresses, normally hidden but in this case taking on a starring role.

Echoing the theatricality of the era, tulle is used to envelop the wearer, creating hyper-feminine models. When it comes to colours, the designers have brought back the tones of the era, embracing sepia, old rose, écru, ivory, khaki… and, of course, black.

Designers Marco Marrero y María Díaz embarked on their professional venture in 1990 with the creation of a design and garment-making workshop in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.

In 1998, M&M joined the collective ‘Tenerife Moda’, a platform for promoting the fashion sector in Tenerife which helped them to make their first incursions in national catwalk shows.

Since their beginnings, their unique style and particularly vintage feel of their collections has become the brand’s hallmark. Marco & María’s designs embrace two styles – Bridal and Party – which are emphasised by their choice of fabrics.

Today, the firm is involved in the process of expanding its commercial network, which started in 2014 with the opening of its flagship store in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its production focuses mainly on the Spanish and European markets and they also export to the Middle East.
